{"product_id":"0014381960020","title":"Stranger from Venus","description":"\"Stranger from Venus is one of the odder postwar science-fiction films to emerge from England. In contrast to such examples as The Four-Sided Triangle and The Quatermass Experiment, which managed to dish up large dollops of drama or chills, Stranger From Venus just sort of lies there very quietly, like something stillborn, which pretty well defines the nature of the movie. Think of The Day the Earth Stood Still, remade with the same female lead and transposed to England, but shot on about 1\/20th the budget with a lot of good intentions. Helmut Dantine plays the mysterious, nameless stranger who is sent to Earth to pave the way for an intervention from outer space, intended to end the possibility of war on Earth. Naturally, as in Robert Wise's superior predecessor, the government tries to take control of the visitor and his technology, which nearly leads to a disaster of global proportions. Patricia Neal plays the woman caught in the middle of these forces, along with a handful of people trapped at a lonely inn where the alien visitor is isolated. The acting talent is solid, but the script and production are decidedly threadbare -- other than the lead actors, the only notable name in the credits is that of editor Peter Hunt, who later edited the early James Bond movies and directed On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The opening two minutes of the movie are actually fairly suspenseful in a bargain-basement budgeted manner, but then the movie settles down to lots of talk and very little action. The DVD is mastered from a very clean source -- there are some frames missing and spots where the soundtrack was damaged, but otherwise this is a good representation of a strange venture into filmmaking. The image quality is generally very good and the sound is smoothly balanced -- indeed, it's possible that more money was spent mastering this movie than shooting it. The 14 chapters break the story (one hesitates to use the word \"\"action\"\") down effectively enough. There is no trailer or other special features, and the movie begins automatically on start-up.\"","brand":"IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47087542272240,"sku":"0014381960020","price":9.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0737\/7593\/9824\/files\/0014381960020_p0.jpg?v=1763766318","url":"https:\/\/shop-qa.barnesandnoble.com\/products\/0014381960020","provider":"Barnes \u0026 Noble (DEV)","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
