Their claim that this print rivals even the original theatrical presentation is, indeed, well founded, as the image sports both solid, vivid colors and virtually no signs of aging at all. The remarkably clean print shows virtually no signs of debris and skin tones are spot-on accurate. As for audio, the Japanese Dolby Digital Stereo track comes through loud with no evidence of hiss or other notable distortion. English subtitles are presented in easy-to-read yellow with bold, black outlining. Though some may be dismayed at the apparent lack of extras offered on this release, upon closer inspection, AnimEigo has done quite a commendable job in including some truly informative, but low-key, bonus materials. Interactive program notes include 25 pages of historical information that truly gives the viewer an intimate understanding of Japanese culture in the period in which the film is set, containing minute detail on everything from social conventions to the code of the samurai. Likewise, helpful liner notes inform the viewer of common phrasing and terms that ultimately result in a better understanding of both the characters and their motivations. Rounding out the extra features are trailers for Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons, Lone Wolf and Cub: White Heaven in Hell, Zatochi the Outlaw and Zatochi: Festival of Fire.
