{"product_id":"0801213023899","title":"Deep Purple: Around the World Live [4 Discs]","description":"\"The interesting life of the entity known as Deep Purple is well chronicled in text and on CD\/video, with this deluxe four disc DVD set a wonderful addition to their library montage, culled from concert footage of the band's \"\"Steve Morse\"\" era beginning in 1999 up to 2002, although some interview \/documentary material on Disc 4 goes up to 2003 as does additional concert film on the the fourth DVD, recorded in Italy in May of 2003. For a major group without one of its key members - Ritchie Blackmore - to be able to consistently tour and generate this much music and excitement is a story unto itself and gets lost as generations change and radio keeps evolving. Ian Gillan says before going in to a version of \"\"No-One Came\"\" from Coliseum, Hong Kong March 20, 2001 \"\"There are little stories behind these songs...\"\" and that the band \"\"came together...just because we loved the music and it's the same today.\"\" This comes after a version of \"\"Mary Long\"\" from Entertainment Center, Newcastle March 14, 2001, so there's plenty of \"\"bonus\"\" material tucked inside the interviews, this entire box overflowing with goodies, jam packed with information aimed directly at the die-hard Deep Purple fan. Glimpses of Jimmy Barnes on the song \"\"Speed King\"\" and other notables make it an extraordinary fan package, the attention to detail from camerawork to editing is a remarkable achievement and creates a template for other groups to study and consider when issuing retrospective product that truly matters. For casual viewers it is worthwhile, though one or two DVDs would probably suffice, the recurring theme of the \"\"Smoke On The Water\"\" riff is inescapable, as well it should be.  On Disc 1 the power of Deep Purple's smooth hard rock sound is unleashed as very controlled and very accessible. These fellows generate music that takes the title \"\"machine head\"\" quite seriously - it is now precision rock, not the crazy flailing of Ritchie Blackmore on the Boston Common in 1972 smashing his guitar and feeding it to a hungry crowd that pushed and pulled for the broken wooden instrument, moving the audience upfront around with a life of its own. Perhaps that manic intensity came at a cost and maybe that's the reason the six faces on the front cover - keyboard players Don Airey and Jon Lord getting equal time - seem so content. This is a true rock aggregation that flawlessly performs the material in no-nonsense fashion. That's an attitude that didn't work for the reconstituted Velvet Underground, a band that needed the wild abandon and was in conflict with a studied approach on 1993's Live MCMXCIII. Purple have the show down pat and deliver to audience after audience and for long-time fans it truly is a sight to behold and cherish. A one hour and fifty three minute concert featuring Steve Morse on guitar along with Glover, Gillan, Lord and Paice kicks off the first disc, entitled \"\"Bombay Calling - India 1995\"\". All four DVDs given their own unique names. A bonus feature tacked on to this set is \"\"Live In Seoul\"\" and it is 55 minutes more from the 1995 tour. Though the editing and multi-camera shots are fine, it has more of a \"\"bootleg\"\" feel and, in that respect the March 18, 1995 from South Korea adds a more fun and less business aspect to the project. Disc two - Total Abandon Australia 1999 contains 15 songs spread out over two hours, interview footage spliced over the credits, plus an Ian Gillan interview from April, 1999 that runs about thirteen minutes, then dives into additional songs - \"\"Strange Kind Of Woman\"\" and, of course Deep Purple playing \"\"Smoke On The Water\"\" on a TV show, Hey, Hey, It's Saturday in Australia while televised guitarists - lots of them - in Melbourne and Sydney play the riff along with the band - talk about technology! The event is wild and has to be witnessed to be fully understood. Disc 3 is entitled \"\"Live at the NEC\"\", a UK tour from 2002 as well as more interview footage - this box is overflowing with \"\"stuff\"\" and it is all good \"\"stuff\"\". The 37 page booklet inside the box, written by Joel McIver puts it all into perspective as specifically as the DVDs. For a latter day version of any band to execute such a wonderfully monstrous work is a testament to the dedication Deep Purple put into their craft. It shows on Deep Purple: Around The World Live, a magnificent labor of love.\"","brand":"UNIVERSAL MUSIC DISTRIBUTION","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47085681967344,"sku":"0801213023899","price":39.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0737\/7593\/9824\/files\/0801213023899_p0.jpg?v=1763869487","url":"https:\/\/shop-qa.barnesandnoble.com\/products\/0801213023899","provider":"Barnes \u0026 Noble (DEV)","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
