The present dissertation has been\u003cbr\u003e   prompted by a desire to make some contribution to the subject of the\u003cbr\u003e   relation of English and German hymnody in general, and in particular to\u003cbr\u003e   show the great debt which the hymnody of England and America owes to\u003cbr\u003e   the poetry of Paul Gerhardt.
