To those living in the monastery he was known affectionately as “The One Who Sees All” – He was given this nickname because all of the monks thought that he saw everything, heard everything, knew everything, and remembered everything worth knowing. To the monks the old man was a legendary man of knowledge and mystery because he had been sent to them by the Dalai Lama and they knew nothing about him before he entered the monastery. Even though the monks continually pestered him and the Abbott with questions about him, all of their questions concerning him and his past were answered with no information at all. No one in the monastery, except the Abbott, ever knew his real name.

When his chores were done, the old man liked to sit on a certain tall rock outside the monastery where he could observe the people, animals, and birds who passed by. Eventually, the old man became known as the "The Observer" and the rock was named "The Rock of The Observer". People would often approach the old man sitting on his rock and ask him questions. Although many asked the name of the old man, he simply replied “My name is not important. You may address me as you wish.” His name was never known by those outside of the monastery, so most visitors simply called him “The Observer” and addressed him as “Master” or “Sir”.
