2940012152374
Contextual Intuition
If we were to evaluate whether or not a law enforcement or military operator was justified in using a selected level of force, we would have to review everything that he/she saw, heard, felt, smelled and said. The interaction of this operator and the subject involved would have to be reviewed from beginning to end so that we could adequately understand exactly what that operator was thinking and feeling at the moment he/she chose to deploy force. Some physical conflicts begin with long periods of interaction prior to the actual physical actions beginning, so we might have to review thirty minutes or more of “frames”. Even if we shorten that number down to a very brief time of five minutes, that is still three hundred seconds (300) and at 10 fps, that is three thousand (3,000!) frames. To properly understand the operator’s motivations, each of those frames would have to be fully described and interpreted. At ten thousand words per frame (picture), that is thirty million (30,000,000!) words to describe the situation.

Now, let’s assume for a moment that we even have the time to review all those frames and the 30,000,000 words of explanation that describe this brief five minute physical conflict: we still cannot fully understand the operator’s feelings, thoughts and motivations because so much of that is dependent on his/her past experience and knowledge. Unless we have had identical training and experiences, our understanding is still going to be an interpretation of what the operator has explained and that interpretation is going to be filtered through our own background of training and experience.

The operator’s personal training, experience, life’s knowledge, etc are all items that we cannot begin to truly understand. Further, in the atmosphere of physical conflict, we cannot fathom what each moment means to the operator as the conflict evolves very quickly until it is over. What we can do, if we structure the operator’s training properly, is empower the operator’s subconscious mind to take full advantage of past knowledge and experience to support faster decisions that are in compliance with legal precepts and organizational doctrine. To do this, we have to understand the power of the subconscious mind in conflict situations, how it works with the conscious mind, and what the operator needs to increase the efficiency of both working together in high-stress physically dangerous conflict situations.
