2940012341228
I seem to have lost my dust pan
In July of 1988, two human beings met under rather unusual circumstances. The book they wrote covers the period prior to and during the first months of their marriage. What they produced was a compilation of communications between two human beings in their early fifties who took a trip across the United States in a trailer, but more importantly embarked upon a voyage in which they came to better discover themselves. . Although the period in which these letters were written is now history, the authors continue to recognize how closely the universe in which they traveled parallels the world in which we live today.
Over the years we have considered whether sharing our experience might offer hope to people struggling with new relationships. The emotions we felt then and continue to experience to this day are apparently relevant. The world has become an even more difficult place in which to reach out to another human being and establish some kind of safe home base. Ours is a love story, but in actuality more than two people are involved. The experiences we shared were intimately tied to the lives of two wonderful dogs, as well as the individuals who crossed our path as we ventured across the United States looking for a better place to live. Maybe the reason that this book needs to be read is that the longer that we live, the more we both have come to recognize how alienated the average single person feels in this contemporary world of computers and television. How odd that we came to find one another using what at the time was considered a very new method of communication. Computers were really in their infancy, and e-mail was a word that had yet to be invented. Today people meet and fall in love on computers, often not meeting for months. Our experience was different, but in many ways the same. We met, the letters offered us a way to communicate what we had difficulty saying. In time these communications offered us a methodology that in many ways parallels the manner in which many single people of today learn to get to know themselves and others. If the book can offer hope instead of fear then it may well find an audience. The main characters now live in Las Vegas Nevada with a ten pound Dachshund. They are surely older, but the question remains are they wiser?
If are capable of drawing an introductory picture of how our letters came to produce a gestalt that has carried us over some very stormy personal landscape, then we would be happy to share them with the world. Hopefulness remains a perspective that humans have difficulty finding. Love continues to be that indescribable experience that can overcome terrorism and the fear of the unknown. How wonderful if our letters can offer a little of both to people such as we were. How wonderful if our book can provide a link with our fellow travelers.
