They cover the gambit of crime categories; prostitution, bootlegging, drugs, kidnapping, fraud, embezzling, and murder. Formatted specifically for the NOOK with an interactive table of contents, this volume contains the following unabridged, original stories:
THE GIRL FROM FARRIS’S
A one-time resident of Chicago's notorious Red light district, Maggie Lynch sets out determinedly to end her life of sin and find a decent job. But on entering the respectable world Maggie finds that deceit and greed are as rampant in corporate offices as on the streets she so desperately wants to escape.
THE RIDER
The kings of two small kingdoms have decided to force their children to marry thus insuring peace for years to come. The children are having none of it. Separately, they both slip away to escape this marriage of inconvenience. When Hemmington Main and Gwendolyn Bass begin to talk about marriage, Mrs. Bass drags Gwen off to Europe to find her a more suitable husband. Mr. Bass (who’s fine with the marriage) finances Hemmington’s trip to Europe to get Gwen back. All four of these young people become entangled in a mess involving kidnapping and fraud, with a local bandit called “The Rider” stuck in the middle of it all.
THE EFFICIENCY EXPERT
Jimmy Torrance graduated from college without a hope -- he'd spent his hours at the university learning how to box, how to swim, how to hit a baseball and lead a football team. He set out for Chicago with all the enthusiastic eagerness of a man who knows in his heart of heart, that he's on the winning team. But Chicago wasn't Ivy-league college football, a there was no team to captain: What Jimmy found in Chicago was a tough life in a tough place at a miserable wage. He found the decency of folks any ordinary fellow would have branded criminals, and he found the criminality of upstanding citizens who surrounded him. He found a whore with a heart of gold, and a safe-cracker who was also a man a body could rely on. And most important of all, in that freakish, frightful burg, Jimmy found a thing called love
THE GIRL FROM HOLLYWOOD
Life at the Pennington's Rancho del Granado was hard, but it was a good life, far removed from the unnatural pressures and dangers of the big city. It was, that is, until the desperate and evil ambitions of a powerful Hollywood drug pusher threatened the very foundations of the Pennington family.
BEWARE!
Edgar Rice Burroughs penned this tale in 1922. It remained unknown until Ray Palmer, a pulp fiction editor, re-vamped the story in 1939 to have a futuristic theme. That the re-vamped tale was THE SCIENTISTS' REVOLT and appeared in July issue of Fantastic Adventures. This story, either version, is not one of the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ best efforts for several reasons: too short, a mystery (which is transparent), and seemingly incomplete. BEWARE! does not have the same polish ERB expended in his more famous tales such as Tarzan or Barsoom, but it is Burroughs and well worth reading.
