2940012844958
Real race discussion #2
Race is one of the main dividing points of U.S. politics. The Democrats tend to attract black voters, and Republicans attract whites. However, the focus here is the division between conservatives and progressives within the white community. We start with the transcript of a real discussion that took place in the Minnesota-based e-democracy forum between March 23 and April 6, 2010. Two very different attitudes emerge among whites harboring conservative or progressive political views.

Two white men of conservative persuasion square off against the progressives on what they regard as the abuses of political correctness. The progressives say “political correctness” is pejorative terms that should not be used in serious political conversations. The conservatives say the progressives are trying to control their speech. Beneath it all, the progressives suspect they are white racists, resentful of their recent loss of position in U.S. society, who use other issues as diversions to mask their frustration.

A progressive woman, who says she had a hard-scrabble upbringing, resents the fact that these white men are complaining. They are ignorant whiners, unwilling to acknowledge their own privilege. She herself was cured of her naive racism by a returning Vietnam veteran, a black man, who yelled at her, calling her a “racist bitch”. Today, she’s thankful for the intervention.

Another progressive complains that the conservatives show no empathy for her and refuse to apologize for this. These conservatives have no heart, no compassion for anyone other than themselves. The conservative, in turn, calls her “self-absorbed”.

There is no changing of minds in this type of racial discussion, only a rather lurid exchange of angry views. Keep in mind that these are whites arguing amongst themselves. The emotional state of white America - at least, represented by these computer discussion-list participants, is not good.
