Alice Gets Love-of-the-Heart

An excerpt from:

CHAPTER I - ALICE GETS LOST IN THE SKY

ONE day a little soul, whose name was Alice, was playing with the tail of the Great Bear up in the sky, when her teacher told her to go to Mars and fetch some red paint for the next day's sunrise. She went and took a bowl out of the Great Dipper and she was tripping along on the milky highway of the stars. But suddenly she noticed that she had lost her way. She felt very much like crying, but of course, little souls never cry, for if they did, they would melt and become little puddles of water instead of boys and girls. She was in a great, big forest full of smoke, and the trees in the forest were all fire, and the animals were ten-legged dogs made out of black clouds. And the dogs chased each other and they barked just like claps of thunder. Alice was quite frightened, until she saw a stork flying with a funny brown thing between his wings.

"Hello," said Alice, "what is this you are carrying, and what are you carrying it for?"

"This is a doctor's satchel," said the stork, "and it's for you."

"What is a doctor's satchel, and what is a doctor?" asked Alice.

"A doctor is a man who carries the satchel and brings little souls in it to mothers."

Now Alice had never been on earth yet, and so she did not at all understand what the stork was telling her. But she was ashamed to let the stork know how ignorant she was, and so she looked very wise and said,

"Are you going to take me in this satchel to a mother?"

"Yes," said the stork. "Get ready now and come on."

"I'd like to go very much," said Alice, "but I'm on an errand now. Teacher sent me to get some red paint from Mars for to-morrow's sunrise."

"Never mind about that," said the stork. "Besides, don't you know that to-morrow the sun has to take his weekly bath in the sea and then change his flannels? So it will have to be cloudy to-morrow, for the sun doesn't want everybody to see him take his bath."

"Oh, sure enough," said Alice. "I forgot all about it."

"Well, then," said the stork, "let's start." "I'm ready," said Alice, and she jumped into the satchel.

"Wait a minute," said the stork. And he plucked two bits of sky and made eyes out of them for Alice.
"Now we're ready," he said, and he shut the satchel and started off.

Soon they came to a star that had trees on which every kind of hair was growing. There was black hair and white hair, golden hair and silvery hair, even green hair and blue hair. And on some trees there grew scalps without any hair at all.

"Let me see now," said the stork. "I wonder what kind of hair I should get for Alice. "Green hair will hardly do, as it is fashionable only for mermaids to have green hair. And blue hair has been out of style ever since the death of Bluebeard. I guess golden hair will match best with blue eyes." So she took a few golden curls and made hair out of them for Alice.

Then they came to another star where silver little bells were tinkling in boats. And these boats sailed on rippling rivers. And the rivers flowed through a wood where larks were singing. The stork took one of the bells and one of the trills of the skylark, and he washed them in the brook. And he melted these together and tied them with a sunbeam. Then he wrapped them up in a piece of gauze that he tore out of the rainbow, and he put them into the throat of Alice and said, "This is to be your song and your laughter. Be careful of them, for the air of the earth is cold and damp, and the songs and the laughter that children bring with them from the stars are liable to lose all their sweetness and all their purity when the children grow up."

And after this the stork kept flying from star to star and gathered from them the color of the lily and of the rose for Alice's cheeks, and the color and the flavor of the strawberry for her lips, and everything else that a baby needs...
