Having been entertained with due respect by\u003cbr\u003ethose holy men, he saluted those Munis (sages) with joined palms, even all\u003cbr\u003eof them, and inquired about the progress of their asceticism. Then all the\u003cbr\u003eascetics being again seated, the son of Lomaharshana humbly occupied the\u003cbr\u003eseat that was assigned to him. Seeing that he was comfortably seated, and\u003cbr\u003erecovered from fatigue, one of the Rishis beginning the conversation,\u003cbr\u003easked him, 'Whence comest thou, O lotus-eyed Sauti, and where hast thou\u003cbr\u003espent the time? Tell me, who ask thee, in detail.'\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAccomplished in speech, Sauti, thus questioned, gave in the midst of that\u003cbr\u003ebig assemblage of contemplative Munis a full and proper answer in words\u003cbr\u003econsonant with their mode of life.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"Sauti said, 'Having heard the diverse sacred and wonderful stories which\u003cbr\u003ewere composed in his Mahabharata by Krishna-Dwaipayana, and which were\u003cbr\u003erecited in full by Vaisampayana at the Snake-sacrifice of the high-souled\u003cbr\u003eroyal sage Janamejaya and in the presence also of that chief of Princes,\u003cbr\u003ethe son of Parikshit, and having wandered about, visiting many sacred\u003cbr\u003ewaters and holy shrines, I journeyed to the country venerated by the\u003cbr\u003eDwijas (twice-born) and called Samantapanchaka where formerly was fought\u003cbr\u003ethe battle between the children of Kuru and Pandu, and all the chiefs of\u003cbr\u003ethe land ranged on either side.
