The case itself was noted for the large quantity of remarkable and\u003cbr\u003eunusual evidence presented by the plaintiff's side--evidence that took the\u003cbr\u003eother party completely by surprise, and overthrew their case like a house\u003cbr\u003eof cards. The affair will, perhaps, be more readily recalled as the\u003cbr\u003eoccasion of the sudden rise to eminence in their profession of Messrs.\u003cbr\u003eCrellan, Hunt \u0026amp; Crellan, solicitors for the plaintiff--a result due\u003cbr\u003eentirely to the wonderful ability shown in this case of building up,\u003cbr\u003eapparently out of nothing, a smashing weight of irresistible evidence.\u003cbr\u003eThat the firm has since maintained--indeed enhanced--the position it then\u003cbr\u003ewon for itself need scarcely be said here; its name is familiar to\u003cbr\u003eeverybody. But there are not many of the outside public who know that the\u003cbr\u003ecredit of the whole performance was primarily due to a young clerk in the\u003cbr\u003eemploy of Messrs. Crellan, who had been given charge of the seemingly\u003cbr\u003edesperate task of collecting evidence in the case.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis Mr. Martin Hewitt had, however, full credit and reward for his\u003cbr\u003eexploit from his firm and from their client, and more than one other firm\u003cbr\u003eof lawyers engaged in contentious work made good offers to entice Hewitt\u003cbr\u003eto change his employers.
