At first sight there does seem to be\u003cbr\u003esome ground for this assertion. Geology, for instance, makes us\u003cbr\u003eacquainted with strata of rock of various kinds, arranged in exact\u003cbr\u003eorder, and of an aggregate thickness of many miles, which are\u003cbr\u003efilled with the remains of a wonderful series of plants and\u003cbr\u003eanimals, these remains not being promiscuously collected, but\u003cbr\u003earranged in an unvarying order. It seems impossible that all these\u003cbr\u003eplants and animals could have lived and died, and been imbedded in\u003cbr\u003ethe rocks in this exact succession, in six of our ordinary days.\u003cbr\u003eAstronomy directs our attention to changes now going on in the\u003cbr\u003estarry heavens which occupy ages in their development, and points\u003cbr\u003eto traces in the constitution of our own world which seem to\u003cbr\u003eindicate that it was formed by analogous means. Physiology reveals\u003cbr\u003eto us the fact that the different varieties of plants and animals\u003cbr\u003enow in existence are not separated from each other by well defined\u003cbr\u003elines of demarcation, but shade into each other by almost\u003cbr\u003eimperceptible gradations; and geological researches show that\u003cbr\u003ewhile the existing species of animals are the representatives of\u003cbr\u003ethose which lived and died at a period in which we can find no\u003cbr\u003etraces of man, they are not identical with them, but that either\u003cbr\u003ethe old species must have died out, and been replaced by a fresh\u003cbr\u003ecreation, or a considerable change must have taken place in the\u003cbr\u003ecourse of ages.
