(2) It seeks to\u003cbr\u003edemonstrate the necessity of an adequate preparation for all who assume\u003cbr\u003ethe responsibility of such administration; particularly for those who,\u003cbr\u003ein consequence of their parental responsibilities, their wealth, their\u003cbr\u003esocial status, or their professional duties, exercise far-reaching\u003cbr\u003einfluence through their standard of life and example. (3) Finally, it\u003cbr\u003egives prominence to the fact that the domestic arts are no collection\u003cbr\u003eof empirical conventions, to be acquired by imitation or exercised\u003cbr\u003eby instinct. It is clearly demonstrated that the group of sciences\u003cbr\u003eupon which they rest is more comprehensive than most people suspect,\u003cbr\u003eand that their contribution to the solution of pressing domestic\u003cbr\u003eproblems has so far been but partially realised. It is, therefore, of\u003cbr\u003econsiderable interest to observe the remarkable consensus of opinion on\u003cbr\u003eeach of these points among the recognised experts in their subjects,\u003cbr\u003eto whom were entrusted the preparation of the various sections of this\u003cbr\u003ebook. The writers of the papers, untrammelled by editorial restrictions,\u003cbr\u003eeach writing from the fulness of her knowledge, tested by ripe\u003cbr\u003eexperience, reached independently conclusions conspicuous for their\u003cbr\u003eunanimity. It will be evident to the most casual reader that, in the\u003cbr\u003eopinion of these thoughtful women, blind instinct must yield place to\u003cbr\u003etrained intelligence, if home life is to be preserved and modern\u003cbr\u003econditions of existence adequately adjusted to human requirements.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eProgressive changes, social, commercial, industrial, and, last but not\u003cbr\u003eleast, educational, now require that this trained intelligence be\u003cbr\u003efostered by organised instruction outside the home, adapted to the\u003cbr\u003eneeds, present or prospective, of girls in every grade of society. Such\u003cbr\u003einstruction, whether in the fundamental sciences or in the applied arts,\u003cbr\u003emust be associated with individual practice in laboratory, studio,\u003cbr\u003eworkroom, and kitchen; the details to be varied as circumstances\u003cbr\u003edictate.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf, however, consistent applications of such knowledge are to be made in\u003cbr\u003eorder that desirable saving in time, labour, money, health, or happiness\u003cbr\u003eshall be effected, graduate women of high attainments are urgently\u003cbr\u003eneeded for the work. It is they only who can bring to bear upon the\u003cbr\u003eproblems of childhood and adolescence, of food, of clothing, of housing,\u003cbr\u003eof domestic economics, of occupation, rest, and recreation, the patient\u003cbr\u003estudy and research in the interests of humanity, which men of similar\u003cbr\u003estanding have lavished upon the advancement of commerce and industrial\u003cbr\u003eprocesses.
