A clear\u003cbr\u003eknowledge of the purpose in speaking is as helpful to the speaker as a road map is to\u003cbr\u003ethe driver. The purpose gives direction to the speech and, to a degree, governs all\u003cbr\u003esubsequent efforts the speaker makes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe speaker should therefore begin preparing his speech by asking himself just what\u003cbr\u003eaction he wishes his audience to take.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe call this desired action the intended audience response (IAR).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe intended audience response should aid the audience, not just the speaker.
