The\u003cbr\u003eIris of this story was a very pretty, thoughtful little girl, aged ten\u003cbr\u003eyears. Her mother often talked to her about her name, and told her the\u003cbr\u003estory which was associated with it. The eldest boy was called Apollo,\u003cbr\u003ewhich also is a Greek name, and was supposed at one time to belong to\u003cbr\u003ethe most beautiful boy in the world. The next girl was called Diana,\u003cbr\u003eand the youngest boy's name was Orion.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen this story opens, Iris was ten years old, Apollo nine, Diana six,\u003cbr\u003eand little Orion five. They were like ordinary children in appearance,\u003cbr\u003ebeing neither particularly handsome nor particularly the reverse; but\u003cbr\u003ein their minds and ways, in their habits and tastes, they seemed to\u003cbr\u003ehave inherited a savor of those far-off beings after whom their mother\u003cbr\u003ehad called them. They were, in short, very unworldly children--that\u003cbr\u003edoes not mean that they were specially religious--but they did not\u003cbr\u003ecare for fine clothes, nor the ordinary amusements which ordinary\u003cbr\u003echildren delight in.
