But, just as\u003cbr\u003eincredible adversity could not crush Abraham Lincoln, so lavish\u003cbr\u003eprosperity could not keep down or spoil Theodore Roosevelt.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn his \"Autobiography\" he tells us that \"about 1644 his ancestor,\u003cbr\u003eClaes Martensen van Roosevelt, came to New Amsterdam as a\u003cbr\u003e'settler'--the euphemistic name for an immigrant who came over in\u003cbr\u003ethe steerage of a sailing ship in the seventeenth century.
