The ground has been gone\u003cbr\u003eover before by various writers, but the narratives that are here retold,\u003cbr\u003eand the characterizations that are here attempted, have not been brought\u003cbr\u003etogether heretofore. They lie wide apart in volumes that are little\u003cbr\u003eknown and out of print.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe stories and the characterizations have been grouped together so\u003cbr\u003eas to form a series of connecting links in the rise and progress of\u003cbr\u003eGeorgia; yet it must not be forgotten that these links are themselves\u003cbr\u003econnected with facts and events in the State's development that are\u003cbr\u003equite as interesting, and of as far-reaching importance, as those that\u003cbr\u003ehave been narrated here. Some such suggestion as this, it is hoped,\u003cbr\u003ewill cross the minds of young students, and lead them to investigate for\u003cbr\u003ethemselves the interesting intervals that lie between.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is unfortunately true that there is no history of Georgia in which\u003cbr\u003ethe dry bones of facts have been clothed with the flesh and blood of\u003cbr\u003epopular narrative. Colonel Charles C. Jones saw what was needed,\u003cbr\u003eand entered upon the task of writing the history of the State with\u003cbr\u003echaracteristic enthusiasm. He had not proceeded far, however, when the\u003cbr\u003efact dawned upon his mind that such a work as he contemplated must be\u003cbr\u003efor the most part a labor of love. He felt the influence of cold neglect\u003cbr\u003efrom every source that might have been expected to afford him aid and\u003cbr\u003eencouragement. He was almost compelled to confine himself to a bare\u003cbr\u003erecital of facts, for he had reason to know that, at the end of his\u003cbr\u003etask, public inappreciation was awaiting him.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd yet it seems to the present writer that every person interested\u003cbr\u003ein the growth and development of the republic should turn with eager\u003cbr\u003eattention to a narrative embodying the events that have marked the\u003cbr\u003eprogress of Georgia. It was in this State that some of the most\u003cbr\u003esurprising and spectacular scenes of the Revolution took place.
