All day\u003cbr\u003ethe air of the room was thick with buzzing insects, but this did not\u003cbr\u003einterfere in any way with the old Bee-man, who walked in among them,\u003cbr\u003eate his meals, and went to sleep, without the slightest fear of being\u003cbr\u003estung. He had lived with the bees so long, they had become so\u003cbr\u003eaccustomed to him, and his skin was so tough and hard, that the bees\u003cbr\u003eno more thought of stinging him than they would of stinging a tree or\u003cbr\u003ea stone. A swarm of bees had made their hive in a pocket of his old\u003cbr\u003eleathern doublet; and when he put on this coat to take one of his\u003cbr\u003elong walks in the forest in search of wild bees' nests, he was very\u003cbr\u003eglad to have this hive with him, for, if he did not find any wild\u003cbr\u003ehoney, he would put his hand in his pocket and take out a piece of a\u003cbr\u003ecomb for a luncheon. The bees in his pocket worked very\u003cbr\u003eindustriously, and he was always certain of having something to eat\u003cbr\u003ewith him wherever he went. He lived principally upon honey; and when\u003cbr\u003ehe needed bread or meat, he carried some fine combs to a village not\u003cbr\u003efar away and bartered them for other food. He was ugly, untidy,\u003cbr\u003eshrivelled, and brown. He was poor, and the bees seemed to be his\u003cbr\u003eonly friends. But, for all that, he was happy and contented; he had\u003cbr\u003eall the honey he wanted, and his bees, whom he considered the best\u003cbr\u003ecompany in the world, were as friendly and sociable as they could be,\u003cbr\u003eand seemed to increase in number every day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne day, there stopped at the hut of the Bee-man a Junior Sorcerer.\u003cbr\u003eThis young person, who was a student of magic, necromancy, and the\u003cbr\u003ekindred arts, was much interested in the Bee-man, whom he had\u003cbr\u003efrequently noticed in his wanderings, and he considered him an\u003cbr\u003eadmirable subject for study. He had got a great deal of useful\u003cbr\u003epractice by endeavoring to find out, by the various rules and laws of\u003cbr\u003esorcery, exactly why the old Bee-man did not happen to be something\u003cbr\u003ethat he was not, and why he was what he happened to be.
