But\u003cbr\u003eit was true that Paddy had no time to play. He had too much to\u003cbr\u003edo. He had had his playtime during the long summer, and now he\u003cbr\u003ehad to get ready for the long, cold winter.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNow, of all the little workers in the Green Forest, on the Green\u003cbr\u003eMeadows, and in the Smiling Pool, none can compare with Paddy the\u003cbr\u003eBeaver, not even his cousin, Jerry Muskrat. Happy Jack Squirrel\u003cbr\u003eand Striped Chipmunk store up food for the long, cold months when\u003cbr\u003erough Brother North Wind and Jack Frost rule, and Jerry Muskrat\u003cbr\u003ebuilds a fine house wherein to keep warm and comfortable, but all\u003cbr\u003ethis is as nothing to the work of Paddy the Beaver.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs I said before, Paddy had had a long playtime through the\u003cbr\u003esummer. He had wandered up and down the Laughing Brook. He had\u003cbr\u003efollowed it way up to the place where it started. And all the\u003cbr\u003etime he had been studying and studying to make sure that he\u003cbr\u003ewanted to stay in the Green Forest. In the first place, he had to\u003cbr\u003ebe sure that there was plenty of the kind of food that he likes.\u003cbr\u003eThen he had to be equally sure that he could make a pond near\u003cbr\u003ewhere this particular food grew. Last of all, he had to satisfy\u003cbr\u003ehimself that if he did make a pond and build a home, he would be\u003cbr\u003ereasonably safe in it. And all these things he had done in his\u003cbr\u003eplaytime. Now he was ready to go to work, and when Paddy begins\u003cbr\u003ework, he sticks to it until it is finished.
