But I shall not\u003cbr\u003ebe positive about their proportion to the rest of the population.  It\u003cbr\u003emay be less than a third--certainly it is not _more_!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEqually certain is it: that every tenth man you meet in the streets of\u003cbr\u003ePuebla is either a priest, or in some way connected with the holy\u003cbr\u003efraternity--and that every tenth woman is far from being an angel!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e_Curas_ in robes of black silk serge, stockings of the finest texture,\u003cbr\u003eand \"coal-scuttle\" hats, full three feet in length; friars of all orders\u003cbr\u003eand colours--black and white, blue, brown, and grey--with shaven crowns\u003cbr\u003eand sandalled feet, are encountered, not only at every corner, but\u003cbr\u003ealmost at every step you take.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf monks were immaculate, Puebla might deserve the sanctified\u003cbr\u003eappellation it has received--the _City of the Angels_.
