It was the custom of the destitute Tohono O'odham to search the many corpses found on the reservation for anything of value. She did and found a small cloth bag inside his trousers. Inside that bag were dozens of cut diamonds.\u003cbr\u003e   She relieved the corpse of the bag of diamonds and continues on her way home. Just before arriving at their house she hears gun shots, sees three men run out of  her hose and drive off in a Army-like vehicle toward the Mexican border. Upon entering the house she finds her mother, brother and sister lying on the floor; all three had been shot to death. Fearing for her life she flees the reservation.\u003cbr\u003e   How she survives and what she does, successfully, with those diamonds is the story told in The Papago Diamonds – the Curse that Wasn’t.
