It has saved me all\u003cbr\u003etrouble of transcription, but by no means, I am sorry to say, that of\u003cbr\u003ecorrection. Those who possess the older edition will readily perceive\u003cbr\u003ethat it differs from the present one very frequently indeed, and that\u003cbr\u003ethe variations are often such as considerably to affect the sense. Many\u003cbr\u003eof the errors in it (such as _casualtyee_ for _casualytee_, _grone_, for\u003cbr\u003e_gone_, _reprent_ for _repent_) are clearly typographical, but there are\u003cbr\u003eothers which would incline me to believe that the transcription was too\u003cbr\u003ehastily executed; several passages being quite meaningless. Near the\u003cbr\u003econclusion of Mr Stevenson’s preface we read: “The pieces which have\u003cbr\u003ebeen selected for the present volume[P1] are printed with such errors of\u003cbr\u003etranscription as have crept into them by the carelessness of the\u003cbr\u003escribe;” a statement which certainly implies that there was no intention\u003cbr\u003eon his part of departing from the original.
