These two ideals are stirring my heart and are the secret of my\u003cbr\u003elife. In the first place, this invitation chimed with the ideal of my\u003cbr\u003epersonal life, namely, to diffuse and propagate among my brothers the\u003cbr\u003escientific ideas, which my brain has accumulated, not through any merit\u003cbr\u003eof mine, but thanks to the lucky prize inherited from my mother in the\u003cbr\u003elottery of life. And the second ideal which this invitation called up\u003cbr\u003ebefore my mind's vision was this: The ideal of young people of Italy,\u003cbr\u003eunited in morals and intellectual pursuits, feeling in their social\u003cbr\u003elives the glow of a great aim. It would matter little whether this aim\u003cbr\u003ewould agree with my own ideas or be opposed to them, so long as it\u003cbr\u003eshould be an ideal which would lift the aspirations of the young people\u003cbr\u003eout of the fatal grasp of egoistic interests. Of course, we positivists\u003cbr\u003eknow very well, that the material requirements of life shape and\u003cbr\u003edetermine also the moral and intellectual aims of human consciousness.\u003cbr\u003eBut positive science declares the following to be the indispensable\u003cbr\u003erequirement for the regeneration of human ideals: Without an ideal,\u003cbr\u003eneither an individual nor a collectivity can live, without it humanity\u003cbr\u003eis dead or dying. For it is the fire of an ideal which renders the life\u003cbr\u003eof each one of us possible, useful and fertile. And only by its help can\u003cbr\u003eeach one of us, in the more or less short course of his or her\u003cbr\u003eexistence, leave behind traces for the benefit of fellow-beings.
