The outpost was named the Cliff after the bold precipice, near\u003cbr\u003ethe base of which it stood.  A slender stockade surrounded it, a\u003cbr\u003eflag-staff rose in the centre of it, and a rusty old ship's carronade\u003cbr\u003ereared defiantly at its front gate.
