And yet, there is, or should be, a report somewhere in\u003cbr\u003ethe musty archives of the Service, covering the incident.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNot accurately, and not in detail. Among a great mass of old records\u003cbr\u003ewhich I was browsing through the other day, I happened across that\u003cbr\u003ereport; it occupied exactly three lines in the log-book of the\u003cbr\u003e_Ertak_:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e     \"Just before departure, discovered stowaway, apparently\u003cbr\u003e      demented, and ejected him.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor the hard-headed higher-ups of the Service, that was report enough.\u003cbr\u003eHad I given the facts, they would have called me to the Base for a\u003cbr\u003elong-winded investigation. It would have taken weeks and weeks, filled\u003cbr\u003ewith fussy questioning. Dozens of stoop-shouldered laboratory men\u003cbr\u003ewould have prodded and snooped and asked for long, written accounts.\u003cbr\u003eIn those days, keeping the log-book was writing enough for me and\u003cbr\u003ebeing grounded at Base for weeks would have been punishment.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNothing would have been gained by a detailed report. The Service\u003cbr\u003eneeded action rather than reports, anyway. But now that I am an old\u003cbr\u003eman, on the retired list, I have time to write; and it will be a\u003cbr\u003eparticular pleasure to write this account, for it will go to prove\u003cbr\u003ethat these much-honored scientists of ours, with all their tremendous\u003cbr\u003eappropriations and long-winded discussions, are not nearly so\u003cbr\u003ewonderful as they think they are. They are, and always have been, too\u003cbr\u003emuch interested in abstract formulas, and not enough in their\u003cbr\u003epractical application. I have never had a great deal of use for them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e       *       *       *       *       *\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had received orders to report to Earth, regarding a dull routine\u003cbr\u003ematter of reorganizing the emergency Base which had been established\u003cbr\u003ethere. Earth, I might add, for the benefit of those of you who have\u003cbr\u003eforgotten your geography of the Universe, is not a large body, but its\u003cbr\u003epeople furnish almost all of the officer personnel of the Special\u003cbr\u003ePatrol Service. Being a native of Earth, I received the assignment\u003cbr\u003ewith considerable pleasure, despite its dry and uninteresting nature.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was a stood sight to see old Earth, bundled up in her cottony\u003cbr\u003eclouds, growing larger and larger in the television disc.
