2940013689169
Dance with Me
Will this love affair be enough to see Pearl and Herby survive after forty-three years of marriage? Love and laughter take Pearl and Herby through twelve years of his dementia in the book, “Dance With Me.”
With much admiration for her mother, the author originally wrote this narrative for her very young niece and nephew. Pearl and Herby face the final challenge committed to each other in the face of adversity.
The author introduces their similarities and differences and attitudes in handling their perils of life. The challenges of a caretaker are unimaginable. Most narratives with diseases usually make us cry. In contrast, this book has so many humorous as well as poignant vignettes that I sometimes forgot this man was not well. That is what makes this inspiring story a necessary read for everyone.
Pearl truly lived by her repetitious phrase, “Don’t take yourself so seriously.” And, as her hair was thinning, she decided wearing wigs would enhance her beauty to keep up appearances for her darling Herby.
One evening, Pearl discovers Herby taking a hot luxurious bath, which he has not done in years. That’s lovely, but Pearl is wondering, how is he going to get out when it’s time. She imagines when Herby calls her for assistance to finally remove himself from the sudsy water, that she, too, will end up in the tub head first as her wig floats up to the top after its flop into Herby’s lap.
How does she handle this? She screams, she giggles, and she needs to tell us her stories. Telling us about these adventures is a gift of kindness. She is no saint. She talks to certain friends, refuses to complain to her son or daughter, as she is their protector. Unfortunately, this stress becomes harmful to her and her health.
Truly living up to their eternal vows to stand by each other in sickness and health, in good times and bad, Pearl and Herby were a shining example to me, their daughter, of how to survive and how to do it with a compelling love.
The author is a graduate of Ohio State University and attended the Institut de Francais in Villefrance-sur-Mer, France. She is an International Flight Attendant in Chicago where she also happens to live.
