That is\u003cbr\u003eover the years. In March, eighteen months after publication of the book\u003cbr\u003eI am talking about, I kept track. The average for that month was sixteen\u003cbr\u003eletters a day! While so fast and furious a pace has by now (mid-spring\u003cbr\u003eof 1945) slacked off, I still get them at the steady rate of about a\u003cbr\u003ehundred a month. These later letters continue to ask the same questions,\u003cbr\u003evoice the same bewilderments, seek the same hopes. The book that elicits\u003cbr\u003ethem is THE UNOBSTRUCTED UNIVERSE, published in October of 1940,\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis book bears my name as author. As a matter of fact, my contribution\u003cbr\u003ewas the plain drudgery of verbatim reporting and the professional\u003cbr\u003ewriter's knack of putting the material into easily readable form. None\u003cbr\u003eof the CONCEPTS were mine: they were dictated to me by my wife Betty\u003cbr\u003esome six months after her death through a friend who chooses to protect\u003cbr\u003eher anonymity under the pseudonym of \"Joan.\" Joan is a psychic of the\u003cbr\u003etype that would be called a \"trance medium,\" were she a professional.*\u003cbr\u003eBut I can count on the fingers of my two hands the number of people who\u003cbr\u003eknow Joan AS Joan.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e* She is the \"Joan\" of OUR UNSEEN GUEST, as well as of THE UNOBSTRUCTED\u003cbr\u003eUNIVERSE.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBetty herself was a \"psychic.\" She had accepted this fact for some\u003cbr\u003etwenty years before her death, since the evening of March 17, 1919, to\u003cbr\u003ebe exact, when she accidentally made the discovery. And between 1919 and\u003cbr\u003e1939 she underwent a continuous and rigorous training as a means to what\u003cbr\u003eshe called \"expansion of spiritual consciousness.\" Though the gain of\u003cbr\u003eso-called psychic powers was not the objective, nevertheless she\u003cbr\u003eacquired them as a sort of by-product, and was able to do various feats\u003cbr\u003esupposed to be possible to \"psychic\" persons. She could enter at will a\u003cbr\u003ehigher consciousness from which she reported back her experiences and\u003cbr\u003ewhat she had seen and was taught. She was also able to transmit to me\u003cbr\u003ethe ideas of discarnate entities we called the Invisibles, either by\u003cbr\u003ereporting back as though by dictation or by permitting her speech\u003cbr\u003emechanism to be used directly.
