In response to the customer claim, the card issuer\u003cbr\u003econtacts the merchant’s credit card processor and disputes the sale. The\u003cbr\u003eproceeds from the original sale are subtracted from the merchant’s account. In\u003cbr\u003eessence, a chargeback is a customer-driven refund conducted without the\u003cbr\u003econsent of the merchant.\u003cbr\u003eWhat is the Chargeback Process?\u003cbr\u003eA chargeback generally begins with a customer complaint. When a customer\u003cbr\u003elodges a complaint about a transaction with the card’s issuing bank, the\u003cbr\u003ecardholder’s bank will generally send what is called a “retrieval request” to the\u003cbr\u003emerchant’s credit card processing service.
