In these scenes the attempt has\u003cbr\u003ebeen made to preserve the spirit and unity of the plays, to shorten them\u003cbr\u003eto practical length, and to adapt them to the demands of the public\u003cbr\u003eaudience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo avoid reprinting material which is already universally accessible, we\u003cbr\u003ehave inserted no scenes from Shakespeare; but the reader is referred to\u003cbr\u003eFulton and Trueblood's \"Choice Readings\" (published by Ginn and\u003cbr\u003eCompany), which contains copious Indexes to choice scenes from\u003cbr\u003eShakespeare, the Bible, and hymn-books. The two volumes include a wide\u003cbr\u003efield of literature best suited for public speaking.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe selections throughout the book are arranged under six different\u003cbr\u003eclasses and cover a wide range of thought and emotion. While many shades\u003cbr\u003eof feeling may be found in the same selection, it has been our aim to\u003cbr\u003eplace each one under the division with which, as a whole, it is most\u003cbr\u003eclosely allied.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe are grateful to the many authors and publishers who have courteously\u003cbr\u003epermitted us to use their publications.
