The world is full of\u003cbr\u003eignorance, and the ignorant will always criticise, because they live to\u003cbr\u003esuffer ills, for they know no better. New light is fast falling upon the\u003cbr\u003edark corners, and the eyes of many are being opened.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e3. RESEARCHES OF SCIENCE.--The researches of science in the past few years\u003cbr\u003ehave thrown light on many facts relating to the physiology of man and\u003cbr\u003ewoman, and the diseases to which they are subject, and consequently many\u003cbr\u003ereformations have taken place in the treatment and prevention of diseases\u003cbr\u003epeculiar to the sexes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e4. LOCK AND KEY.--Any information bearing upon the diseases of mankind\u003cbr\u003eshould not be kept under lock and key. The physician is frequently called\u003cbr\u003eupon to speak in plain language to his patients upon some private and\u003cbr\u003estartling disease contracted on account of ignorance. The better plan,\u003cbr\u003ehowever, is to so educate and enlighten old and young upon the important\u003cbr\u003esubjects of health, so that the necessity to call a physician may occur\u003cbr\u003eless frequently.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e5. PROGRESSION.--A large, respectable, though diminishing class in every\u003cbr\u003ecommunity, maintain that nothing that relates exclusively to either sex\u003cbr\u003eshould become the subject of popular medical instruction. But such an\u003cbr\u003eopinion is radically wrong; ignorance is no more the mother of purity than\u003cbr\u003eit is of religion. Enlightenment can never work injustice to him who\u003cbr\u003einvestigates.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e6. AN EXAMPLE.--The men and women who study and practice medicine are not\u003cbr\u003ethe worse, but the better for such knowledge; so it would be to the\u003cbr\u003ecommunity in general if all would be properly instructed on the laws of\u003cbr\u003ehealth which relate to the sexes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e7. CRIME AND DEGRADATION.--Had every person a sound understanding on the\u003cbr\u003erelation of the sexes, one of the most fertile sources of crime and\u003cbr\u003edegradation would be removed. Physicians know too well what sad\u003cbr\u003econsequences are constantly occurring from a lack of proper knowledge on\u003cbr\u003ethese important subjects.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e8. But\u003cbr\u003ehenceforth it is a transplanted growth of its own--a new and free power of\u003cbr\u003eactivity in which the mainspring is no longer authority or law from\u003cbr\u003ewithout, but principle or opinion within. The shoot which has been\u003cbr\u003enourished under the shelter of the parent stem, and bent according to its\u003cbr\u003einclination, is transferred to the open world, where of its own impulse and\u003cbr\u003echaracter it must take root, and grow into strength, or sink into weakness\u003cbr\u003eand vice.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e3. HOME TIES.--The thought of home must excite a pang even in the first\u003cbr\u003emoments of freedom. Its glad shelter--its kindly guidance--its very\u003cbr\u003erestraints, how dear and tender must they seem in parting! How brightly\u003cbr\u003emust they shine in the retrospect as the youth turns from them to the\u003cbr\u003ehardened and unfamiliar face of the world! With what a sweet,\u003cbr\u003esadly-cheering pathos they must linger in the memory! And then what chance\u003cbr\u003eand hazard is there in his newly-gotten freedom!
