During these years also the other great developmental force\u003cbr\u003eknown as _Environment_ has full play, the still plastic nature is\u003cbr\u003emoulded by circumstances, and the influence of these two forces is\u003cbr\u003eseen in the manner of individual that results.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis time is generally alluded to under two heads: (1) Puberty, (2)\u003cbr\u003eAdolescence.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBy Puberty we understand the period when the reproductive organs are\u003cbr\u003edeveloped, the boy or girl ceasing to be the neutral child and\u003cbr\u003eacquiring the distinctive characteristics of man or woman. The actual\u003cbr\u003eseason of puberty varies in different individuals from the eleventh to\u003cbr\u003ethe sixteenth year, and although the changes during this time are not\u003cbr\u003esudden, they are comparatively rapid.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBy Adolescence we understand the time during which the individual is\u003cbr\u003eapproximating to the adult type, puberty having been already\u003cbr\u003eaccomplished. Adolescence corresponds to the latter half of the\u003cbr\u003edevelopmental period, and may be prolonged even up to twenty-five\u003cbr\u003eyears.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCHAPTER I.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCHANGES OBSERVABLE DURING PUBERTY AND ADOLESCENCE IN GIRLS.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e1. Changes in the Bodily Framework.--During this period the girl's\u003cbr\u003eskeleton not only grows remarkably in size, but is also the subject of\u003cbr\u003ewell-marked alterations and development. Among the most evident\u003cbr\u003echanges are those which occur in the shape and inclination of the\u003cbr\u003epelvis. During the years of childhood the female pelvis has a general\u003cbr\u003eresemblance to that of the male, but with the advent of puberty the\u003cbr\u003evertical portion of the hip bones becomes expanded and altered in\u003cbr\u003eshape, it becomes more curved, and its inner surface looks less\u003cbr\u003edirectly forward and more towards its fellow bone of the other side.\u003cbr\u003eThe brim of the pelvis, which in the child is more or less\u003cbr\u003eheart-shaped, becomes a wide oval, and consequently the pelvic girdle\u003cbr\u003egains considerably in width. The heads of the thigh bones not only\u003cbr\u003eactually, in consequence of growth, but also relatively, in\u003cbr\u003econsequence of change of shape in the pelvis, become more widely\u003cbr\u003eseparated from each other than they are in childhood, and hence the\u003cbr\u003egait and the manner of running alters greatly in the adult woman. At\u003cbr\u003ethe same time the angle made by the junction of the spinal column with\u003cbr\u003ethe back of the pelvis, known as the sacro-vertebral angle, becomes\u003cbr\u003ebetter marked, and this also contributes to the development of the\u003cbr\u003echaracteristic female type. No doubt the female type of pelvis can be\u003cbr\u003erecognised in childhood, and even before birth, but the differences of\u003cbr\u003emale and female pelves before puberty are so slight that it requires\u003cbr\u003ethe eye of an expert to distinguish them. The very remarkable\u003cbr\u003edifferences that are found between the adult male and the adult female\u003cbr\u003epelvis begin to appear with puberty and develop rapidly, so that no\u003cbr\u003eone could mistake the pelvis of a properly developed girl of sixteen\u003cbr\u003eor eighteen years of age for that of a boy.
