She started to write after retiring from twenty-five years of teaching in the public school system. Feeling a need to “keep busy,” she enrolled in courses that offered classes in writing. The author has always enjoyed reading poetry. So, given the nature of the classes she attended, she tried her hand at writing poetry. She soon discovered that writing allowed her to release emotions and give voice to thoughts in print. Mrs. Kelly usually writes after witnessing or experiencing an event. The poem “Katrina” was penned after the event of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She was inspired to write “Dare to Hope” after the 2008 Presidential Campaign and Barack Obama’s successful triumph in the democratic primary.
