He spent his later life in Kennebunkport, ME. His papers were left to Colby College, Waterville, ME. He is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novels The Magnificent Ambersons (1918) and Alice Adams (1921). Orson Welles filmed The Magnificent Ambersons in 1942. The Modern Library includes it in its top-100 novels.
