There were plenty of parked cars around but none moving on the road. Where are all the people? I no sooner thought this when I saw a man and a young boy walking on the pavement to my left. I pulled alongside them and put my head out the window intending to ask about a nearby pub when my heart started beating funky tunes inside my chest. The kumquat boy! The one from the grocery store. There was no denying that flat, smooth look. I glanced at the man walking beside him. His father maybe? Must be. The man's face looked to be an older version of the boy's. Where's the mother?
Probably off having a nervous breakdown.
Inappropriately, I laughed out loud. The walkers stopped. The man looked straight ahead but the kumquat boy turned and stared directly at me. His eyes held no hint of emotion yet my heart froze under his gaze. I tore my eyes away from his and hit the gas pedal. As the car lurched forward my heart starting beating again and my breath expelled in a sudden rush. I hadn't been aware that I was holding it in. What the hell is going on around here?
The liquor store in the next block caught my attention with it's insistent blinking neon light; OPEN, OPEN, OPEN. I didn't need a drink of whiskey. I needed a fifth of whiskey.

Story 2: The Corner of My Eye:

There! It just went by! It swept past me fast as lightning and now it's gone again. Wait a minute. The closet is right near where it disappeared. Only a curtain covers the coats hanging inside. Door broke nearly two years ago and I never bothered. The shadow, the shape-shifter, the whatever you want to call it went in there! I pick up the wooden back-scratcher from the chipped and stained coffee table. I look at it as I hold it in my hand and it suddenly seems foreign to me. Just a thin, two foot long handle with fake “fingers” curling down at one end. How do I think I will defeat my house invader with this thing? Scratch it to death?

Story 3: The Old Stone Church:

He takes my elbow and pulls me toward the creepy old building. I drag my feet slowly up the cracked and crumbling steps toward a huge set of double doors. The doors are arched and made of dark heavy wood. Weather and neglect has left their imprint, leaving them dry and cracked. Decades of dirt fill the cracked wood and I can see a thin, whitish worm squiggling its way through the grime. One door is firmly shut and the other hangs slightly open, tilting on a broken hinge. The milky threads of a cobweb spread across the opening of the doors, suggesting that it has been a long time since anyone passed through its portal. I hang back, the shivers returning with renewed force.

Bonus Story Flash Fiction: Fish Bait

She doesn't know what I know about the biggest bass in Trimpers Lake. Nobody else knows but me. Big Jake is a meat eater. He doesn't waste his time chasing anything but juicy, fragrant meat.
R.
