2940014894005
Three Years in the Confederate Horse Artillery Annotated
Presented is a Civil War diary. This book has not been changed as to its classic 19th century metaphor. This puts the reader in a real 19th century state of mind and reading the diary is almost like time travel.
George M. Neese, diarist, joined Chew's Battery in late 1861. He participated in the Valley Campaign, where he aptly described the battles of Kernstown, Port Republic and Cedar Mountain. He gives a detailed account of Turner Ashby’s death and the ensuing mourning of this great loss. Neese’s account of the Battle of Brandy Station confirms reports of the reputation of saber fighting there. His battery went with Imboden's Brigade to Gettysburg and saw action on the retreat. He also depicts the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Trevilian Station battles. Neese was captured in October '64 and sent to Point Lookout Prison, where his intense personal misery and depression can be felt as he describes in great detail the wretched prison conditions. He was paroled in late June of 1865.
