From the lists given in the following\u003cbr\u003epages (pp. 28-32), it will be seen that in about seventy-one years,\u003cbr\u003eduring the reigns of Elizabeth, James I. and Charles I., no fewer than\u003cbr\u003eseventy-eight persons--fifty-eight of them being women, and twenty of\u003cbr\u003ethem men--were brought to trial for Sorcery in Guernsey alone. Out of\u003cbr\u003ethese unfortunate victims, three women and one man appear to have been\u003cbr\u003eburnt alive; twenty-four women and four men were hanged first and\u003cbr\u003eburnt afterwards; one woman was hanged for returning to the island\u003cbr\u003eafter being banished; three women and one man were whipped and had\u003cbr\u003eeach an ear cut off; twenty-two women and five men were banished from\u003cbr\u003ethe island; while five women and three men had the good fortune to be\u003cbr\u003eacquitted. Most of these accused persons were natives of Guernsey, but\u003cbr\u003emention is made of one woman from Jersey, of three men and a woman\u003cbr\u003efrom Sark, and of a man from Alderney.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith regard to the gatherings at the so-called Witches' Sabbaths,\u003cbr\u003ethere can be no doubt that--quite apart from the question of any\u003cbr\u003ediabolic presence at such meetings--very questionable assemblies of\u003cbr\u003epeople did take place at intervals among the inhabitants of many\u003cbr\u003ecountries. Probably these gatherings first had their rise in the old\u003cbr\u003epagan times, and were subsequently continued from force of habit, long\u003cbr\u003eafter their real origin and significance had been forgotten. Now, it\u003cbr\u003ewould be very easy for these orgies to become associated--particularly\u003cbr\u003ein the then superstitious condition of the popular mind--with the\u003cbr\u003eactual bodily presence of the Devil as one of the participants; while\u003cbr\u003eit is also not improbable that, in some cases at least, heartless and\u003cbr\u003eevil-minded persons worked upon the prevailing credulity to further\u003cbr\u003etheir own nefarious purposes.
