All his life long his first and never-sleeping passion was\u003cbr\u003ethe romantic and splendid ambition after knowledge, for the conquest of\u003cbr\u003enature and for the service of man; gathering up in himself the spirit\u003cbr\u003eand longings and efforts of all discoverers and inventors of the arts,\u003cbr\u003eas they are symbolised in the mythical Prometheus. He rose to the\u003cbr\u003ehighest place and honour; and yet that place and honour were but the\u003cbr\u003efringe and adornment of all that made him great. It is difficult to\u003cbr\u003eimagine a grander and more magnificent career; and his name ranks among\u003cbr\u003ethe few chosen examples of human achievement. And yet it was not only an\u003cbr\u003eunhappy life; it was a poor life. We expect that such an overwhelming\u003cbr\u003eweight of glory should be borne up by a character corresponding to it in\u003cbr\u003estrength and nobleness. But that is not what we find. No one ever had a\u003cbr\u003egreater idea of what he was made for, or was fired with a greater desire\u003cbr\u003eto devote himself to it. He was all this. And yet being all this, seeing\u003cbr\u003edeep into man's worth, his capacities, his greatness, his weakness, his\u003cbr\u003esins, he was not true to what he knew. He cringed to such a man as\u003cbr\u003eBuckingham. He sold himself to the corrupt and ignominious Government of\u003cbr\u003eJames I. He was willing to be employed to hunt to death a friend like\u003cbr\u003eEssex, guilty, deeply guilty, to the State, but to Bacon the most loving\u003cbr\u003eand generous of benefactors.
