Leading\u003cbr\u003ecritics, whose literary accomplishments, powers of persuasive argument,\u003cbr\u003eand unquestionable good faith, lend great influence to their decisions,\u003cbr\u003eshow no sort of hesitation in undertaking to interpret the characters\u003cbr\u003eand careers of famous men and women, independently of any examination\u003cbr\u003eof evidence, by purely psychological methods. I am not denying that, as\u003cbr\u003eliterary exercises, some of these impressionist portraits of men and\u003cbr\u003ewomen of genius, seen through the temperament of writers who are,\u003cbr\u003e_sometimes_, endowed with genius themselves, are very interesting. But\u003cbr\u003ewhat has to be remembered (and what is constantly forgotten) is, that if\u003cbr\u003ethese psychological interpretations of people who once really existed\u003cbr\u003eare to be accorded any authority as historical judgments, they must have\u003cbr\u003ebeen preceded by an attentive enquiry, enabling the future interpreter,\u003cbr\u003ebefore he begins to employ psychology, to feel perfectly certain that he\u003cbr\u003ehas clearly in view the particular Soul he is undertaking to penetrate,\u003cbr\u003ewith its own special qualities, and placed amongst, and acted upon by,\u003cbr\u003ethe real circumstances of its earthly career.
