As a\u003cbr\u003epractical problem, the habit of crowd-making is daily becoming a more\u003cbr\u003eserious menace to civilization. Events are making it more and more clear\u003cbr\u003ethat, pressing as are certain economic questions, the forces which\u003cbr\u003ethreaten society are really psychological.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eInterest in the economic struggle has to a large extent diverted\u003cbr\u003eattention from the significance of the problems of social psychology.\u003cbr\u003eSocial psychology is still a rather embryonic science, and this\u003cbr\u003enotwithstanding the fact that psychiatry has recently provided us with a\u003cbr\u003emethod with which we may penetrate more deeply than ever before into the\u003cbr\u003einner sources of motive and conduct.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe remedy which I have suggested in Chapter X deserves a much more\u003cbr\u003eextended treatment than I have given it. It involves one of the great\u003cbr\u003emooted questions of modern philosophical discussion. It is, however, not\u003cbr\u003ewithin the province of this book to enter upon a discussion of the\u003cbr\u003ephilosophy of Humanism. The subject has been thoroughly thrashed over in\u003cbr\u003ephilosophical journals and in the writings of James, Schiller, Dewey,\u003cbr\u003eand others. It is sufficient for my purpose merely to point out the fact\u003cbr\u003ethat the humanist way of thinking may provide us with just that\u003cbr\u003eeducational method which will break up the logical forms in which the\u003cbr\u003ecrowd-mind intrenches itself.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThose who expect to find a prescribed formula or ideal scheme of\u003cbr\u003eorganization as a remedy for our social ills may feel that the solution\u003cbr\u003eto which I have come--namely, a new educational method--is too vague.\u003cbr\u003eBut the problem of the crowd is really concerned with the things of the\u003cbr\u003emind.
