They were suggested by the tercentenary\u003cbr\u003eof the King James version of the Bible. The plan adopted led to a\u003cbr\u003erestatement of the history which prepared for the version, and of that\u003cbr\u003ewhich produced it. It was natural next to point out its principal\u003cbr\u003echaracteristics as a piece of literature. Two lectures followed, noting\u003cbr\u003eits influence on literature and on history. The course closed with a\u003cbr\u003estatement and argument regarding the place of the Bible in the life of\u003cbr\u003eto-day.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe reception accorded the lectures at the time of their public delivery,\u003cbr\u003eand the discussion which ensued upon some of the points raised, encourage\u003cbr\u003ethe hope that they may be more widely useful.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is a pleasure to assign to Dr. Franklin W. Other religions have their sacred writings, but they do not\u003cbr\u003ehold them in the same regard as do these three. Buddhism and Confucianism\u003cbr\u003ecount their books rather records of their faith than rules for it, history\u003cbr\u003erather than authoritative sources of belief. The three great\u003cbr\u003eBook-religions yield a measure of authority to their sacred books which\u003cbr\u003ewould be utterly foreign to the thought of other faiths.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYet among the three named are two very distinct attitudes. To the\u003cbr\u003eMohammedan the language as well as the matter of the Koran is sacred. He\u003cbr\u003ewill not permit its translation. Its original Arabic is the only\u003cbr\u003eauthoritative tongue in which it can speak. It has been translated into\u003cbr\u003eother tongues, but always by adherents of other faiths, never by its own\u003cbr\u003ebelievers.
