Reasons for excluding types earlier\u003cbr\u003edescribed as pathological liars will be found throughout our\u003cbr\u003ework.  Better definition goes hand in hand with better\u003cbr\u003eunderstanding, and it is only natural that formal, detailed\u003cbr\u003econtemplation of the subject should lead to seeing new lines of\u003cbr\u003edemarcation.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDefinition:  Pathological lying is falsification entirely\u003cbr\u003edisproportionate to any discernible end in view, engaged in by a\u003cbr\u003eperson who, at the time of observation, cannot definitely be\u003cbr\u003edeclared insane, feebleminded, or epileptic.  Such lying rarely,\u003cbr\u003eif ever, centers about a single event; although exhibited in very\u003cbr\u003eoccasional cases for a short time, it manifests itself most\u003cbr\u003efrequently by far over a period of years, or even a life time. \u003cbr\u003eIt represents a trait rather than an episode.  Extensive, very\u003cbr\u003ecomplicated fabrications may be evolved.  This has led to the\u003cbr\u003esynonyms:--mythomania; pseudologia phantastica.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is true that in the previous literature, under the head of\u003cbr\u003epathological liars, cases of epilepsy, insanity, and mental\u003cbr\u003edefect have been cited, but that is misleading.  A clear\u003cbr\u003eterminology should be adopted.  The pathological liar forms a\u003cbr\u003especies by himself and as such does not necessarily belong to any\u003cbr\u003eof these larger classes.  It is, of course, scientifically\u003cbr\u003epermissible, as well as practically valuable, to speak of the\u003cbr\u003eepileptic or the otherwise abnormal person through his disease\u003cbr\u003eengaging in pathological lying, but the main classification of an\u003cbr\u003eindividual should be decided by the main abnormal condition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA good definition of pathological accusation follows the above\u003cbr\u003elines.  It is false accusation indulged in apart from any obvious\u003cbr\u003epurpose.  Like the swindling of pathological liars, it appears\u003cbr\u003eobjectively more pernicious than the lying, but it is an\u003cbr\u003eexpression of the same tendency.  The most striking form of this\u003cbr\u003etype of conduct is, of course, self-accusation.  Mendacious self-\u003cbr\u003eimpeachment seems especially convincing of abnormality.
