Mr. Montriou has aided, so far as enabled by\u003cbr\u003ejuridical acquirements and experience. The language of translation\u003cbr\u003ehas, therefore, been a joint labour, often the result of much and\u003cbr\u003eanxious discussion, and, if not unfrequently but a choice of doubtful\u003cbr\u003ealternatives, yet, always a choice made with pains and circumspection.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe text we have generally followed is Stenzler's[2] which is based on\u003cbr\u003eand selected from two MSS. in the royal library at Berlin and two\u003cbr\u003eeditions published in Calcutta.[3]\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe have not neglected constant comparison with Stenzler's German\u003cbr\u003etranslation as well as with the several detached passages as\u003cbr\u003etranslated by Colebrooke and W. Macnaghten.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWords within brackets ( [ ] ) are not in the original text.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eReferences to, and extracts from, the standard commentary upon\u003cbr\u003eYájnavalkya, the Mitákshará, necessarily form the staple of our notes.\u003cbr\u003eAll such extracts are distinguished by the initial (_M._), and the\u003cbr\u003eauthor of the commentary we invariably refer to as, the Commentator.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAt the same time, we have not blindly or implicitly followed this\u003cbr\u003ecommentator. In some sense all Hindu glosses are untrustworthy guides.\u003cbr\u003eThey assume the text to be the language of inspiration; and, as the\u003cbr\u003eseveral Dharma Śástras not merely differ, but often dispose of the\u003cbr\u003esame subject in a contradictory manner, Pandits deem it their duty to\u003cbr\u003ereconcile all discrepancies, how forced soever their interpretations\u003cbr\u003emay be.
