After Robert apparently died she became more open about her relationships with powerful men, which she used to advantage to advance a cause close to her heart; Southern secession. When the war finally came, she was already spying for the South.  Caught by Allan Pinkerton, she and her daughter Rose, who was only eight years old, were placed under house arrest and then imprisoned.
