It must, however, be recollected, that to emigrate and settle\u003cbr\u003ein Canada was, at that time, a very different affair to what it is now.\u003cbr\u003eThe difficulty of transport, and the dangers incurred, were much\u003cbr\u003egreater, for there were no steamboats to stem the currents and the\u003cbr\u003erapids of the rivers; the Indians were still residing in Upper and many\u003cbr\u003eportions of Lower Canada, and the country was infested with wild animals\u003cbr\u003eof every description--some useful, but many dangerous: moreover, the\u003cbr\u003eEuropeans were fewer in number, and the major portion of them were\u003cbr\u003eFrench, who were not pleased at the country having been conquered by the\u003cbr\u003eEnglish. It is true that a great many English settlers had arrived, and\u003cbr\u003ehad settled upon different farms; but as the French settlers had already\u003cbr\u003epossession of all the best land in Lower Canada, these new settlers were\u003cbr\u003eobliged to go into or toward Upper Canada, where, although the land was\u003cbr\u003ebetter, the distance from Quebec and Montreal, and other populous parts,\u003cbr\u003ewas much greater, and they were left almost wholly to their own\u003cbr\u003eresources, and almost without protection.
