2940016231495
Quickly Bay
It is not every day, even in days of old, that a ship developed a personality. It was not uncommon, but it did not happen every day. The Feenicks was not a normal ship even for a vessel with a personality. She was built from all sorts of leftover parts, and it appears that each one had a personality of its own. In the year 1660, the Navy Board is created in England, which sets the stage for the events that lead a number of colorful people to join with an eccentric English frigate and go to a new America in 1781.
The first part of the book is rather serious and concerns itself with the life of the man who built the Feenicks. He is a loner, a well-respected shipwright and a man of principle. Several families are interwoven into his life, although he does not ask for their inclusion but accepts their existence as part of his own. For a basically unknown shipbuilder, his funeral is rather remarkable with members of the royalty, the government and the British Navy in attendance. He leaves behind one daughter he never knew he fathered, twin boys who are a bit slow but very loving that he has nurtured since their mother's death, a covey of bright young men who admire his mind and capabilities and his final triumph, the Feenicks.
The second part of the book places this ship in Quickly Bay, a marvelous place for a man or ship to be. Due to plans by the British Secret Service, she becomes a floating bordello, an escape vehicle, and most firmly a vessel with a mind of her own...or has the shipwright moved from his worn, frail, human body to a spirit that inhibits the accomplishment of his life?
Enjoy your journey with the Feenicks, as she controls her own destiny and that of those lucky enough to voyage aboard her as she wends her way through the islands of the East Indies, to Colonial Philadelphia... and beyond.
