And, let us trust that this will\u003cbr\u003eprove true in this marriage of Occultism and Science, celebrated in this\u003cbr\u003ebook.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Occultists usually get at the \"facts,\" first, but they manage to\u003cbr\u003eevolve such outrageous theories to explain the facts, that the world\u003cbr\u003ewill have none of their wares, and turns to Science for something\u003cbr\u003e\"reasonable.\" Science, proceeding along different lines, at first denies\u003cbr\u003ethese \"facts\" of the Occultists, not finding them accounted for by any\u003cbr\u003eof her existing theories; but, later on, when the \"facts\" have been\u003cbr\u003efinally thrust under her eyes, after repeated attempts and failures, she\u003cbr\u003esays, \"Oh, yes, of course!\" and proceeds to evolve a new theory, welding\u003cbr\u003eit with other scientific hypotheses, and after attaching a new label\u003cbr\u003ethereto, she proudly exhibits the thing as \"the latest discovery of\u003cbr\u003eModern Science\"--and smiles indulgently, or indignantly, when the theory\u003cbr\u003eof the old Occultists is mentioned, saying, \"Quite a different thing, we\u003cbr\u003eassure you!\" And yet, in all justice, be it said, Science usually\u003cbr\u003eproceeds to find much better \"proofs\" to fit the \"facts\" of Occultism,\u003cbr\u003ethan did the Occultists themselves. The Occultist \"sees things,\" but is\u003cbr\u003ea poor hand at \"proofs\"--while the Scientist is great on \"proofs,\" but\u003cbr\u003eso often, and so long, fails to see many things patent to the Occultist\u003cbr\u003ewho is able to \"look within\" himself, but who is then unable to\u003cbr\u003epositively and scientifically \"prove\" the facts. This is easily\u003cbr\u003eexplained--the Occultist's information comes from \"within,\" while the\u003cbr\u003eScientist's comes from without--and \"proofs\" belong to the \"without\"\u003cbr\u003eside of Mentation. And this is why the Occultists so often make such a\u003cbr\u003ebungle regarding \"proofs\" and the Scientist fails to see \"facts\" that\u003cbr\u003eare staring the Occultist in the face.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe whole history of Occultism and Science proves the above. Take the\u003cbr\u003ephenomenon called \"Mesmerism\" for instance--it was an old story with the\u003cbr\u003eOccultists, who had been for years aware of it, theoretically and\u003cbr\u003epractically. Mesmer brought it into general prominence, and Science\u003cbr\u003elaughed at it and at Mesmer's \"fluid\" theory, and called him a charlatan\u003cbr\u003eand imposter. Years afterwards, Braid, an English surgeon, discovered\u003cbr\u003ethat some of the facts of \"Mesmerism\" were true, and he announced his\u003cbr\u003ediscovery in a scientific manner, and lo! his views were accepted, and\u003cbr\u003ethe thing was called \"Hypnotism,\" poor old Mesmer being forgotten,\u003cbr\u003ebecause of his theory. Then, after a number of years, certain other\u003cbr\u003easpects of the phenomenon were discovered, and scientifically relabelled\u003cbr\u003e\"Suggestion,\" and the re-naming was supposed to \"explain\" the entire\u003cbr\u003esubject, the learned ones now saying, \"Pooh, 'tis nothing but\u003cbr\u003e'Suggestion,'\" as if _that_ explained the matter.
