2940016350790
Money, Manure & Maintenance
Marian Coffin was a pioneer woman landscape architect who designed large estate landscapes as well as college campuses in the first half of the twentieth century. She was a 1904 graduate of M.I.T., studied plants at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, and was known especially for her knowledge of tree, shrubs, and roses. She was voted a Fellow of the American Association of Landscape Architects, one of the first women to achieve this honor. Many of the properties she designed are now open to the public, including Winterthur, Mt. Cuba, and The King's Garden at Ft. Ticonderoga, and the C.W.Post campus of Long Island University. Referring to herself as a young woman student among mostly men, she remarked, "It is social suicide and certainly matrimonial suicide for a woman to pursue a profession!" Her family connection and friendship with Henry Francis duPont led to her commission to design Winterthur in Delaware. Successful industrialists of the pre-income tax era also sought her expertise during the building of country houses on Long Island. Coffin said that there were three ingredients necessary for successful gardens: Money, Manure & Maintenance.
