Two others know something of this but for decades have kept their secrets, a situation which may easily have endured until the affair's details went with them to their graves.
Then something happens which changes this possibility. Two strangers arrive at the small settlement of Bonya Community, some four hundred kilometres north east of Alice Springs. They claim to be prospectors wanting to explore the nearby spinifex and mallee country of the Simpson Desert’s immediate northern margin, and are hopeful of employing a guide to help them. Senior Custodian for the area is the elderly Twofoot Jack, and the pair are directed to his house. There they explain themselves without revealing their true intentions, which are to find and investigate a highly significant Aboriginal ceremonial site.
Twofoot Jack sends his son Jack Cadney, with instructions to steer the prospectors away from their secret place should they look like stumbling on it. But there is more to this rocky outcrop than that, and prior to their departing Twofoot finds it necessary to enlighten Cadney with some highly confidential information about the place – and not all of it old tribal secrets.
On arriving there later in the day Cadney and the two prospectors have a falling out, and when Cadney returns home he informs his father of their trespassing - something which makes the old man extremely angry. Yet how could they have done so, when not a whitefella alive is supposed to know the place even exists?
Then, a week or so later, the pilot of a light aircraft reports what appears to be an abandoned vehicle in the desert margin country on nearby Tarlton Downs Station and Northern Territory bush policeman Senior Constable Rick Frazier is ordered from his Harts Range post to investigate. But his regular Police Aide is away on tribal business, so he calls at Bonya Community to enlist Jack Cadney as a temporary replacement – Cadney having had previous experience as a Police Aide.
On arriving at the vehicle Cadney is thoroughly perplexed. Where is the driver? And why dump a perfectly good two-year old tray back 4x4 Nissan Patrol in the middle of nowhere? Soon Cadney begins to suspect a murder has been committed, despite there being no evidence or body. And when another killing comes to light the wily Twofoot is obliged to explain to his son how an important cultural asset is now under threat, and this requires even more of his personal secrets be revealed.
The two then hatch a plan to rectify the issue, but before it can be acted upon the policeman unexpectedly returns from Harts Range. And when Cadney’s culturally commendable but legally questionable actions are accidentally exposed it leaves him without options and has the policeman demanding answers…
