Kennedy and with the support of congress,\u003cbr\u003eone of its primary charges was to encourage investigations in human development throughout the\u003cbr\u003elifespan, with an emphasis on understanding developmental disabilities, including intellectual\u003cbr\u003edisabilities (historically referred to as mental retardation). The mission of the IDD Branch is to:\u003cbr\u003e• Develop and support research and research training programs in IDD;\u003cbr\u003e• Administer a program of support for centers for research in IDD;\u003cbr\u003e• Coordinate with university-affiliated programs for IDD with respect to integration of\u003cbr\u003eresearch, training, and service activities; and\u003cbr\u003e• Partner with other federal agencies, organizations, and advocacy groups to advance efforts\u003cbr\u003etoward the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of IDD that will improve the\u003cbr\u003equality-of-life for these individuals and their families.\u003cbr\u003eSince its last report to the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development (NACHHD)\u003cbr\u003eCouncil, the Branch has continued its mission through a variety of mechanisms, grants, and\u003cbr\u003econtracts. The Branch has also added breadth to its portfolio by expanding traditional efforts to\u003cbr\u003eaddress quality-of-life issues for individuals with IDD, while increasing multidisciplinary and\u003cbr\u003etranslational research to facilitate the movement of basic research from the bench to the clinic\u003cbr\u003eand beyond.
